Alexis Drogoul (UMI UMMISCO, on assignment at USTH and current representative of IRD in Vietnam and Philippines) works on the design of Artificial Intelligence tools to assist in the modeling and simulation of complex systems, with a marked willingness to facilitation of interdisciplinary work and extraction of transversal concepts. Since 1991, he participates to the definition of some of the fundamental concepts of “agent-based modeling”, while working on many thematic applications (in ethology, hydrology, geography, traffic…). In 1998, at the crossroads of computer science, experimental economics and participatory design, he works more specifically on participatory modeling and simulation approaches allowing to involve social actors in the design of models and particularly suitable to the management of conflicts for shared resources; they have been successfully applied in the field (in Bhutan, Vietnam, Thailand, Mexico). From 2005, he became the designer and one of the main architects of the modeling and simulation platform GAMA which aims to make available to non-computer specialists designing tools of spatially explicit models, multi-formalisms and multi-scales, and enable “smart” exploration (using simulation and optimization) of the area of their parameters. In the same time, thematic projects he is involved in for 10 years now, first in Hanoi and later in Can Tho and in Da Nang, are moving towards decision support in the policies of fight against environmental disasters (sea level rise and water salinization in the Mekong Delta, biological invasions, epidemiology of avian influenza, urban disasters).
